Photogrammetry is a discipline in itself with many sub-specialties using different technologies and processes. Surveyors' photogrammetric use generally involves digital or physical image formats for interpretive purposes or basic measurements. They may also be involved in pre-flight control surveys and object targeting.

This topic covers basic single- and stereo-image principles and measurements. While aerial imagery has been transitioning from film- to digital-based capture technology, the principles of the former still define aspects of the latter. Understanding these basic principles helps understand how aerial imagery can be used effectively and what its limitations may be.
